Watershed Management

JW Associates has been active in watershed protection planning in Colorado since the Buffalo Creek Fire in 1996. We have been helping many of the water management agencies in the Colorado Front Range prioritize and plan protection measures in their forested watersheds. Our background in forest management, wildland hydrology and wildfire hazard assessments provides us with a strong skill set to provide our clients with effective solutions to large problems.

We have been working with Colorado Springs Utilities on a comprehensive watershed management plan. One aspect to that plan is pre- and post wildfire strategies and preparedness. The watershed protection planning for Colorado Springs Utilities spans from just east of Aspen to Pueblo Reservoir.

We have also been working with water supply agencies and land management agencies to respond to the recent wildfires in Colorado, including the Hewlett Gulch, High Park and Waldo Canyon fires. We specialize in creating long-term solutions to complex issues involved in watershed/forest management.

Brad Piehl is a founding member of the Watershed Wildfire Protection Group which is part of the Front Range Roundtable. He is the vice-chair of the Colorado Bark Beetle Cooperative. Brad is part of the Forest Health Task Force in Summit County, Colorado and part of the Healthy Headwaters (a national watershed protection group). He has also been involved on several projects that assessed the effects of wildfires on watersheds in Colorado, including the Hayman Fire in 2002 and many of the major wildfires in 2012.
